3. 주제: Soft bioelectronic devices for brain-machine interfaces and peripheral nerve interfaces
Brain-machine interface (BMI) is a technology that directly connects the brain and machines such as computers and robots. Recently, polymer-based interfacing devices have gained more attention owing to the advantages such as flexibility, biocompatibility, and mechanical compliance. This talk will introduce polymer-based interfacing devices to read out neural signals from or to stimulate neurons in the brain. We developed neural interfacing devices based on polymers that are soft, flexible and biocompatible, thereby expected to be compliant with biological tissues. To achieve stable contact between the neural tissue and the electrodes and to minimize foreign body responses, soft and flexible microelectrode arrays were developed based on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and parylene C. Using the fabricated devices, action potentials from the brain cortex and peripheral nerves were successfully recorded with high resolution over months. Also, we developed PDMS-based surface-type microelectrode arrays. Somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs), in response to mechanical stimulus to the skin, were successfully recorded from the cortical surface of rats and primates, with high spatial resolution over long term. In addition, peripheral nerve interfacing technologies based on soft actuation will also be introduced.
